Alabama vs. Clemson: Will Calvin Ridley stifle the Tigers’ pass defense?

Can Ridley get past Clemson?

Calvin Ridley may not get a lot of attention for his ability, but he could be the reason Alabama is able to top Clemson in tonight’s College Football Playoff Championship.

According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Alabama is favored in this championship game, as the Crimson Tide are getting odds of -6.5 points against Clemson. The over/under total for the contest has been set at 50.5 points. These two meet tonight at 8:30PM ET on ESPN from University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ.

Ridley has had a very good season for Alabama (13-1, 8-6 ATS), especially considering the Tide rank just 67th nationally in passing yards. The freshman receiver caught 83 passes for 1,031 yards and 7 touchdowns in 2015. Tonight, the Tide are up against Clemson (14-0, 7-7 ATS), which has a very strong pass defense. The Tigers are ninth in pass yards allowed, giving up just 177.2 per game. That could be a tough test for a freshman receiver and a quarterback that hasn’t necessarily played in a lot of big games in Jake Coker.

Oddsmakers expect some good things from Ridley tonight, as he is getting an over/under of 7 receptions and 87.5 receiving yards. His odds to score a touchdown in the contest has been set at -110. Ridley is coming off his best game of the season, as he caught 8 passes for 138 yards with two touchdowns against Michigan State in the semifinal. Ridley has had 7 catches or more in 6 games this season and he also has 88 yards or more in 6 games as well. One thing to note with the Clemson pass defense is that Oklahoma receiver Sterling Shepard had 7 catches for 87 yards in the Orange Bowl against the Tigers.
