Appalachian State Mountaineers Game Notes

Appalachian State senior WR Jalen Virgil caught three passes for 45 yards and a touchdown and a returned a kick for a score in a 34-26 win over Georgia Southern on Saturday. Virgil (6’1/205) got the Mountaineers on the board with a 16-yard touchdown connection with Zac Thomas. He showed off his impressive speed again — Virgil was ranked third on Bruce Feldman’s “freaks” list this summer because of his athleticism — on a 100-yard kickoff return for a score. Because of his size and ability to make plays, Virgil has a good chance of being looked at in an NFL camp this summer.

North Texas Mean Green Game Notes

North Texas redshirt sophomore QB Austin Aune completed 16-of-29 passes for 302 yards and five touchdowns in Friday’s 45-43 win over UTEP. Aune also tacked on a rushing touchdown, meaning he scored every single touchdown North Texas scored on Friday. Despite some of UNT’s QB woes this year, Aune was on fire against the Miners. Aune’s five passing touchdowns were not only a career-best, but it was two better than his previous high. Aune had never thrown more than three touchdowns in a game before this game versus UTEP. Unfortunately, UNT’s season is now over (save for a potential bowl game) and Aune will not really get to build on this until next year. UNT finish the year 4-5.

Appalachian State vs. North Texas Betting Prediction

The under is 6-1-1 in the Mountaineers’ last eight games coming off a win and has cashed in six of their last seven games when facing an opponent with a losing record. The under is also 3-1-1 in their last five non-conference games and is 5-2 in their last seven games as a favorite.

On the other side, the under is 14-4 in the Mean Green’s last 18 games following a win, is 8-3 in their last 12 games after scoring more than 40 points in their previous game and is 16-7-1 in their last 24 games after allowing more than 450 total yards in their previous game.

MYRTLE BEACH BOWL PREDICTION: APPALACHIAN STATE/NORTH TEXAS UNDER 65.5
