Bama’s Derrick Henry favored to win Heisman Trophy over McCaffrey, Watson

Derrick Henry favored to win Heisman

Now that the three finalists have been announced, Alabama running back Derrick Henry has emerged as the clear favorite to win the Heisman Trophy award.

Oddsmakers from online sports book Mybookie.ag have Henry listed as a 1/15 favorite to take home the Heisman honors this season. Stanford all-purpose back Christian McCaffrey has the next best odds at 11/2, while Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson is the clear long shot at 26/1.

A quarterback has won the award five straight years but it would appear as though Henry will be the first running back to take home the Heisman since fellow Alabama product Mark Ingram Jr. won in 2009. The last three Heisman winners were Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota, Florida State signal-caller Jameis Winston, and Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel.

Henry rushed for 1,986 yards and 23 touchdowns on 339 carries (5.9 YPC) this season for the Crimson Tide. Along with a stout defense, Henry has helped ‘Bama reach the college football playoff for the second year in a row.

While Stanford was left out of the top 4 this season, the Cardinal wouldn’t have won as many games as they did without the do-it-all McCaffrey, who rushed for 1,847 yards and eight touchdowns on 319 carries. He also caught 41 passes for an additional 540 yards and four touchdowns.

As for the sophomore Watson, all he did was complete 287-of-413 passes for 3,512 yards with 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions to go along with a 159.6 QB rating. He also rushed for 887 yards and an additional 11 touchdowns on 163 carries while leading the Tigers to an undefeated season, an ACC title, and a No. 1 ranking in this year’s college football playoffs.
