Clemson Tigers Game Notes
Clemson junior QB Trevor Lawrence completed 26-of-37 passes for 403 yards and two touchdowns in a 52-17 victory over Pitt on Saturday. Lawrence (6’6/220) didn’t skip a beat after missing two games following a positive coronavirus test and another game because Florida State opted not to play due to a singular positive COVID-19 test within the Clemson program. The Heisman contender toyed with Pitt like they were a JV team, running up a 31-0 lead in the first quarter before putting it in cruise control for the next three quarters, as the Tigers could have scored 80 points if they felt like it. Clemson travels to Blacksburg next Saturday to take on Virginia Tech before lining up their pivotal December 19 ACC Championship Game collision with Notre Dame. Only this time, Lawrence will be under center instead of true freshman DJ Uiagalelei.
Virginia Tech Hokies Game Notes
Virginia Tech redshirt junior QB Hendon Hooker completed 13-of-22 passes for 260 yards and two touchdowns in a 47-14 loss to Pitt on Saturday. Hooker (6’4/220) didn’t play badly, as he still averaged 11.9 yards per pass attempt while rushing 14 times for 53 yards. However when the Hokies needed him to make a play, he came up short far too often, converting only three-of-eleven third down situations causing Virginia Tech to control the ball for only 24:02 of game time. In the third quarter with Virginia Tech down two scores, they went for it on fourth-and-goal from the two yard line with Hooker attempting a straight ahead dive. For one of the rare instances this season, Pitt repelled the massive redshirt junior signal caller, and subsequently drove the length of the field for a touchdown that put the game out of reach. His interception wasn’t really his fault, as Tre Turner tripped on an 10-yard out and was unable to regain his footing in time to keep the defender from picking the pass off. Having lost three games in a row, the Hokies have a bye week before welcoming Trevor Lawrence and the Clemson Tigers to town on December 5.
