According to oddsmakers at GTBets, Stanford is currently listed with 40/1 odds to win the College Football Playoffs this upcoming season. The Cardinal are getting odds of +650 to win the Pac-12 Championship, while their over/under total for wins is listed at 8.5.

After going 11-2, 12-2 and 11-3 in his first three years as head coach at Stanford, Shaw’s Cardinal went just 8-5 in 2014 and had a 5-4 conference record. It was the team’s first time not earning a top spot in the Pac-12 North under Shaw.

Not surprising, the 2014 Stanford team had a tremendous defense, allowing just 16.4 points per game, which ranked second nationally. It was offensive struggles that hurt Stanford the most. The Cardinal averaged just 27.2 points per game while amassing just 386.6 yards per game. The team has a veteran QB in Kevin Hogan, who is entering his senior season after throwing for 39 TDs in his last two years. Hogan was named to the Manning Award watch list recently and he ended his 2014 season with three straight solid outings, completing 70 percent or better of his passes in those games. The key for Stanford will be finding breakout players at the skill positions. The team didn’t have a rusher or receiver over 605 yards in 2014.

Stanford opens up the season in a bit of a tough way, playing three of its first four games on the road. Things being at Northwestern before hosting UCF, then the Cardinal hit the road to take on USC and Oregon State. Other Pac-12 road games are Washington State and Colorado while home conference games featured Arizona, UCLA, Washington, Oregon and Cal. The Cardinal then close the season at home with Notre Dame. This schedule is not easy, so if Stanford can’t develop as an offense, it could be a struggle to get to 8 or 9 wins. If Hogan takes another step, Stanford won’t take a step back toward double-digit wins.
