The Hokies are a perfect 3-0 to start the season, picking up wins over West Virginia, Delaware and ECU. The Hokies are 1-1-1 with the over/under total thus far. The team is again led by its powerful defense. Tech is allowing just 13.7 points and 365.3 yards per game in 2017. On offense, the Hokies are averaging 40.7 points and 482.3 yards behind a balanced attack. Quarterback Josh Jackson has thrown for 829 yards and eight touchdowns without an interception this year. He also has 115 rushing yards and a score. He is one of three Hokies with over 100 yards on the ground this season. Cam Phillips is the top receiver with 27 catches for 417 yards and five touchdowns.
Old Dominion is 2-1 to start 2017, picking up wins over Albany and UMass while losing 52-23 against North Carolina. The Monarchs are also 2-1 with the under, due mostly to an offense that is averaging just 23.7 points and 322.3 yards per contest. Blake LaRussa has been the leading passer with 358 yards and two touchdowns in three games, but he also has three interceptions. Jeremy Cox is the leading rusher with 158 yards on 53 carries. Defensively, Old Dominion is allowing just 25.7 points and 372.7 yards per game, but the Monarch struggled mightily against UNC, allowing 511 yards.
Bet on Old Dominion vs. Virginia Tech
The total seems a little high for this matchup, as it seems like Virginia Tech will dominate on both sides of the ball. It’s not out of the realm of possibilities that the Monarchs get shutout by the Hokies. However, the trends say go with the over. The Hokies are 9-2-1 with the over in their last 12 September games and 11-3-1 with the over in their last 15 non-conference contests. I expect the Hokies to put up a lot of points, and probably with big plays. Jackson should be able to carve up this team. I would also look for Old Dominion to manufacture some points along the way, probably in mop-up duty, in order to help hit the over.
