Wisconsin started the season with a dominant 59-10 win at home over Utah State, covering the 27-point spread in the process. The Badgers started a little slow, falling behind 10-0 before scoring 59 unanswered points. Wisconsin put up a balanced offensive attack, posting 244 passing yards and 234 yards rushing while holding Utah State to just 304 total yards and forcing four turnovers. Alex Hornibrook also started slow, but finished the game 15-of-23 passing for 244 yards and three touchdowns. Troy Fumagalli was his main target, as he caught five passes for 105 yards. The Badgers had a steady run game behind Jonathan Taylor and Bradrick Shaw, who combined for 171 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries. Shaw was injured in the game, and is questionable to play on Saturday.
Florida Atlantic began the Lane Kiffen-era with a 42-19 loss at home to Navy. The Owls were just an 8-point underdog in the contest. FAU couldn’t stop the potent Navy run game in the loss, as the Midshipmen racked up 416 yards on the ground while holding the Owls to just 40 rushing yards. FAU had 17 rushing attempts, averaging just 1.7 yards per carry. Daniel Parr led Florida Atlantic in the game by throwing for 281 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Willie Wright caught three passes for 92 yards and a touchdown.
Wisconsin showed last week that it can take its game up another level by scoring 59 points in the last three quarters while holding an opponent scoreless with its dominant defense. Both the offense and defense should be even better this week with a game under their belt. FAU isn’t on the same level as a program as Utah State, so I don’t think Kiffin can turn things around quickly. FAU has failed to cover in its last 5 non-conference games while Wisconsin is 5-1 ATS in its last 6 September contests. Go with the Badgers on Saturday.
