Penn State starts a new era of football with Joe Paterno gone and Bill O’Brien taking over. The Nittany Lions are starting a four-year postseason ban with scholarship limitations. Ohio is coming off a loss in the MAC Championship a year ago, finishing 10-4. The Bobcats have won at least eight games the last three years.
Trends show that Penn State is just 1-5 against the point spread odds in its last 6 games against MAC opponents and 1-12 ATS in its last 13 games in September. Ohio is 10-3 against the spread in its last 13 games as an underdog.
Oddsmakers see Penn State as the favorite in this game, as the Nittany Lions have odds of -6 against Ohio. The over/under total has been set at 44.5 points (View Matchup). The odds opened at Penn State -10.5, but the spread has been dropping steady all month, now settling in at -6.
Penn State has dealt with a lot of changes the last year. The Nittany Lions have dealt with major losses in just the last month following the NCAA punishment, as players have been free to transfer. Among them was running back Silas Redd, who left for USC. The Nittany Lions have a senior quarterback in Matt McGloin, but he may not even be the top QB on the roster. The Nittany Lions are likely to struggle to move the ball. They averaged just 19.3 points per game in 2011 with a much better roster. Defensively, Penn State held opponents to 16.8 points per game and 324 yards per game. Again, the team is somewhat depleted. The defense should be strong, but probably won’t be as strong as it was in 2011.
Ohio is in its eighth season under coach Frank Solich. The Bobcats have been very strong under Solich and this year, the offense has six starters back, led by quarterback Tyler Tettleton. Tettleton threw for 3,302 yards and 28 TD’s a year ago, He also rushed for 658 yards and 10 scores. He led the Bobcats to 30.5 points per game a year ago. Defensively, Ohio only allowed 22.1 points per game. The defense has eight starters back, including five members of the front sevent.
In terms of Injuries, Ohio has some minor injuries to its younger players, nothing that should be real impactful for the team. Penn State has no major injuries to report.
The Public Bets are currently supporting Penn State as the Nittany Lions are getting 73% of the wagers with odds of -6 against Ohio on Saturday.
