Clemson names Bryant starter

The defending national champion Clemson Tigers have officially named a starting quarterback for the 2017 season.

According to ESPN.com, Dabo Sweeney named junior signal-caller Kelly Bryant the starter for this upcoming season. Bryant has big shoes to fill replacing Deshaun Watson, who was selected by the Houston Texans in the first round of April’s NFL draft.

“He has earned it and I am proud of him,” said Swinney. “It has been a great competition, but this part is over.”

Bryant, a junior, has played in 12 games in his career. He has completed 13 of 18 passes for 75 yards and a touchdown, with 35 rushes for 178 yards and three scores, giving him 253 yards of total offense on 53 plays for his career.

The Tigers will open their 2017 season with a home game against Kent State at 12:00PM ET  on Saturday, September 2. According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, Clemson is a 38.5-point favorite to knock off the Golden Flashes. The Tigers opened as a 40-point favorite but the line was bet down. The total, meanwhile, sits at 50.5 points.

The Tigers are a perfect 4-0 against the spread in their last four non-conference games. They’re also 8-3 against the number in their last 11 home games and have covered in eight of their last 11 games in September as well. That said, they’re just 1-3-1 ATS in their last five games against MAC opponents.
