College Football Week 1 Picks – Bowling Green vs. Ohio State 9/3/16

Bowling Green vs. Ohio St. Pick

Will No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes face any challenges when they host Bowling Green today at Noon ET?

According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Ohio State is the clear favorite in this game, as the Buckeyes are getting odds of -28 points against the Falcons on Saturday. The over/under total is listed at 67 points. These two haven’t met since the 2006 season, but BG has covered the spread in their last four meetings with the Buckeyes.

Ohio State continues to be the preseason favorite in the Big Ten and another national title contender. This year’s team has a lot more questions than the 2015 squad, though, as this year’s team has to replace a number of skill-position players, mainly Ezekiel Elliott. However, the team does return star QB J.T. Barrett, who can beat you with his arms and legs. While the Ohio State defense could struggle a little bit while it replaces a number of studs as well, it should be able be successful based on raw talent and depth.

Bet on Bowling Green vs. Ohio State

Bowling Green is a dangerous MAC opponent, as they are coming off a conference title last season. While they lost head coach Dino Babers, they still bring some talent on offense. James Knapke leads the offense at quarterback. He didn’t see much time last year, but did play often in 2014. The Falcons also have good protection up front, with four returning linemen. Bowling Green had a good defense in 2015, but that was also by MAC standards. They allowed a lot of points in non-conference action.

The Falcons were 10-4 against the spread last season, but they gave up at least 44 points in their four losses. Even while replacing some skill position talent, the Buckeyes shouldn’t have a lot of trouble moving the ball against Bowling Green. The real question is how will the BG offense perform against the Buckeyes? Will they do enough to stay within four touchdowns? I just don’t see it. The Falcons are replacing a lot of skill-position players like Ohio State is, but the Falcons don’t have the depth through recruiting to make that a smooth transition. It’s also a new system they will be using for the first time. Look for Ohio State to win with ease and confirm everyone’s preseason expectations.
