Stanford vs. Cal Prediction

The Stanford Cardinal should pick up its eighth win of the year but will they cover as a double-digit favorite at Cal today at 5:30PM ET?

According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, the Cardinal is now a 10.5-point road favorite versus the Golden Bears after opening as a 12-point favorite. The total, meanwhile, opened at 61 but has been bet up to 63.5 points at the majority of sports books.

This is the 119th meeting of the “Big Game.” Stanford has won the last six meetings, which is one shy of its longest winning streak in this series according to ESPN.com Stats & Information. The Cardinal is also looking to win its fourth straight game in Berkeley, which is something the team hasn’t done since 1962-68.

In the Cardinal’s seven wins, the team has allowed just 14.0 points per game and allows 338.9 yards per game. In Stanford’s three losses, however, it has allowed 32.0 points per game and 413.7 yards per contest. That will be something to consider given Cal’s strength is on the offensive side of the ball.

OUR PREDICTION: The Golden Bears failed to cover as a 20-point underdog at USC, as a 19-point home underdog versus Washington, and as a 17-point road dog at Washington State. But Cal should be able to move the ball against a Stanford defense that has been inconsistent this season. The Golden Bears rank eighth nationally in total offense and 15th in offensive points scored per game. While Cal has struggled defensively all season, I like taking the points here in what should be a shootout.
