College Football Week 2 Picks: Virginia vs. Oregon 9/10/16

Virginia vs. Oregon Pick

Will Oregon throttle Virginia tonight and cover as a big favorite when the two non-conference teams meet at 10:30PM ET?

According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, the Ducks are 23.5-point home favorites versus the Cavaliers while the over/under currently sits at 70.5 points. Neither the side nor the total have moved off the original numbers posted by oddsmakers.

The Bronco Mendenhall era did not get started on the right foot last weekend, as Virginia lost 37-20 to FCS opponent Richmond as an 11-point home favorite. Signal-caller Kurt Benkert completed 26-of-34 attempts for 264 yards with three touchdowns and one pick, but Virginia had no running game. As a team, the Cavaliers had 38 yards on 21 carries, which resulted in a 1.8 YPC average.

The Ducks had an easier time with its blood donor last week, as they blasted UC-Davis 53-28 as a 48-point favorite. Royce Freeman rushed 87 times and two touchdowns on 11 carries while Dakota Prukop completed 21-of-30 passes for 271 yards and three touchdowns in his debut with the Ducks. (See why we think tonight’s game will be high-scoring for bettors.)

OUR PICK: The knee-jerk reaction would be to fade a Virginia team that lost to Richmond last Saturday, but look for the Cavaliers to play much better tonight. The Ducks are 1-5 against the spread in their last six non-conference games and are 2-7 ATS in their last nine home games, so it’s not as if Eugene has been an instant cover for bettors like it was a few years ago. Surely the Ducks will overlook the Cavaliers, who will cover the big number.
