SMU, Baylor set for high-scoring showdown
Baylor already annihilated its lone FCS opponent of the year. This afternoon, will Jim Grobe’s group look just as strong against one of the AAC’s most improved squads?
The high-flying Bears welcome SMU to McLane Stadium at 2:30 p.m. ET. Oddsmakers at online sports book BetDSI have installed the home team as a 32.5-point favorite. Meanwhile, the over/under is 75.5.

In last Saturday’s 55-7 drubbing of Northwestern State, Baylor managed to open up a 48-0 halftime advantage. Beyond the explosive offense, however, those on the other side of the ball achieved grand success. The Bears’ 3-4 defense permitted just 78 yards, amassing 15 tackles for loss and a pair of sacks.
Grobe, the school’s interim coach, needs to see more of the same with the Mustangs rolling into town. SMU scorched North Texas for 572 total yards in a 34-21 victory at Apogee Stadium a week ago. Xavier Jones rushed for 115 yards and a score on only 11 carries.

The sophomore should be prepared for a much greater workload shortly. The Mustangs’ No. 1 quarterback, Matt Davis, could miss the contest due to a knee injury. If he sits, the onus falls on Ben Hicks to keep the visitors competitive. He threw for 145 yards vs. the Mean Green, including an 88-yard touchdown strike to Courtland Sutton in the first quarter.
On other side, it’s all about Seth Russell. On the heels of a four-TD performance in Baylor’s first tilt, the signal-caller’s ready to bombard SMU’s D. Look for a steady diet of Shock Linwood, too, as the tailback requires but 107 yards to become the all-time leading runner in Waco. Such milestones will be reason enough to bank on points aplenty.
