College Football Week 5 Picks: Connecticut vs. Houston 9/29/16

Connecticut vs. Houston Pick

The college football weekend gets underway this Thursday night when No. 6 Houston meets up with Connecticut. Will this game feature a lot of points?

According to oddsmakers at BetDSI, Houston is the clear favorite at home in this game, as the Cougars are getting odds of -27.5 points against Connecticut. The over/under total for the contest is currently listed at 51.5 points. These two met last season with UConn picking up a 20-17 home victory as a 7.5-point underdog. They hit the under of 50 points.

Bet on Connecticut vs. Houston

The Cougars are off to a 4-0 start with a 64-3 win at Texas State on Saturday. The Cougars are 3-1 against the spread and 3-1 with the under this season. The Cougars are one of the most impressive teams so far in 2016, averaging 44.8 points and 497.5 yards per game on offense while holding their opponents to just 10.5 points and 228.8 yards per game. Greg Ward Jr. is leading the offense with 936 passing yards and five touchdowns while Duke Catalon has 225 rushing yards. Four other players have at least 110 rushing yards as well.

UConn fell to 2-2 on the season with a 31-24 loss to Syracuse at home last weekend. The Huskies are now 0-3-1 against the spread and 2-2 with the under. The Huskies are giving up 22.5 points and 381 yards per game on defense, including 120 rushing yards per game. On offense, the Huskies are putting up just 21.3 points and 354.5 yards per game. Quarterback Bryant Sirreffs has thrown for 819 yards and two touchdowns with 40 catches and 388 yards going to Noel Thomas.

Connecticut has been one dimensional in its passing game with the majority of yards going to Thomas. That should be easy for Houston to defend. The Cougars should also be able to stop the UConn run game, as they are giving up only 37 rushing yards per game. Offensively, Houston should be able to run the ball right over Connecticut. The Huskies gave up 235 yards on the ground to Navy, and Houston may have a stronger attack with more weapons. The total is low because oddsmakers don’t feel UConn will score much, which is likely true. But, I could see UConn getting some garbage points late to help hit the over while Houston could push for 51 points on their own.
