College Football Week 6 Predictions: Boise State vs. New Mexico 10/7/16

Boise St. vs. New Mexico Prediction

No. 19 Boise State hopes to avoid a letdown on the road when it takes on New Mexico tonight at 9PM ET on the CBS Sports Network.

According to oddsmakers at BetDSI, Boise State is favored on the road in this game, as the Broncos are getting odds of -17 points against New Mexico. The over/under total for the contest has been set at 61.5 points. Boise State has won six of the last seven meetings with the Lobos, but New Mexico has covered in five straight against the Broncos.

Bet on Boise State vs. New Mexico

Boise State is off to a 4-0 start following a 21-10 win over Utah State last week, however the Broncos are just 1-3 against the spread on the year. Boise State is giving up just 18 points and 358 yards per game on defense thanks to a run defense that has held opponents to just 72 rushing yards per game. On offense, Boise is putting up 33.8 points and 475 yards per game. Jeremy McNichols has led Boise’s ground attack with 504 rushing yards and seven touchdowns while Brett Rypien has thrown for 1,024 yards and six scores.

New Mexico is coming off a 48-41 win over San Jose State last week to improve to 2-2 on the season, but the Lobos are 1-3 against the spread. New Mexico’s offense has been steady this season, producing 38.8 points and 476 yards per game. The defense is giving up 32.8 points per game despite allowing just 355.8 yards per game. New Mexico has one of the top rushing attacks in the country, averaging 347 yards per game on the ground. However, leading rusher Teriyon Gipson is battling a hamstring injury that could hinder his performance tonight, though he is listed as probable to play. He has run for 399 yards and five touchdowns while Tyrone Owens has run for 308 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Austin Apodaca has thrown for just 372 yards and three touchdowns this year.

Boise State is unbeaten but now winning with a lot of ease as of now. However, their wins are over more impressive teams than what New Mexico has been competing against. The Broncos are steady enough with the offense that they should be able to score on the Lobos. The defense also seems good enough to keep New Mexico from racking up its usual amount of points. I don’t see this game being a score-for-score shootout. I see Boise jumping out early and then holding off the Lobos from making a backdoor cover.
