Virginia Tech was 11-3 last season, its eighth straight season with at least 10 wins. The Hokies reached the ACC Championship Game before bowing out to Clemson. Georgia Tech was 8-5 last year, its third winning season in four years under coach Paul Johnson. Virginia Tech has won 6 of the 9 meetings with the Yellowjackets.
Trends show that the road team has covered the spread in 5 of the last 6 games in this series. The under has been hit in the last 5 in this series as well. Georgia Tech is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games in September while Virginia Tech is just 0-5-1 ATS in its last 6 home games.
Oddsmakers have made Virginia Tech the favorite at home in this game, giving the Hokies a point spread of -7.5 against Georgia Tech. The over/under total has been set at 48.5 points (View Matchup). The opening odds had Virginia Tech favored by 7 points. The spread has gone back and forth between 7 and 7.5 points, but eventually settled with the hook.
Virginia Tech comes into 2011 with 14 starters back, but just three on offense. The Hokies posted 27.9 points and 413 total yards a year ago, but that may be tough this season with four new starters on the offensive line. Quarterback Logan Thomas is back after throwing for 3,015 yards and 19 TDs in 2011, but he will have many new receivers and a new running back to break in. Defensively, the Hokies have nine starters back from a group that allowed only 17.6 points and 305 yards per game.
Georgia Tech returns 15 starters from last year’s team. Offensively, the Yellowjackets averaged 34.3 points and 459 total yards per game. Tech had one of the top rushing attacks in the country, posting 316 yards per game. The Jackets return their top three rushers from last year and four starters on the offensive line, which should make them a powerful offense. Defensively, Georgia Tech allowed 26.1 points and 359 total yards per game in 2011. The Jackets have six starters back on defense, including sack leader Jeremiah Attaochu.
In terms of Injuries, Virginia Tech linebacker Tariq Edwards is expected to miss the game with a leg injury. Georgia Tech linebacker Daniel Drummond is expected to be suspended for the game, as is cornerback Louis Young.
The Public Bets show that the betters are behind Virginia Tech in this game. Of the wagers, 63% are being placed on Virginia Tech with odds of -7.5 points against Georgia Tech.
