COLLEGE PARK, MY (The Spread) – It has been a long month for Miami, but the Hurricanes will finally start the 2011 College Football Season on Monday when they head to Maryland.

Miami was 7-6 last season and 5-8 against the spread. The Hurricanes got rid of coach Randy Shannon and hired Al Golden from Temple. Miami has 9 players suspended for the game due to an NCAA investigation involving the players and a booster. Among the suspensions is quarterback Jacory Harris. Maryland was 9-4 last season and 9-4 against the spread, but the Terrapins still cut ties with Ralph Friedgen and hired former UConn coach, Randy Edsall. The home team has won the previous two meetings in this contest.
Trends show that Miami is just 4-10 against the spread in their last 14 conference games while Maryland is 7-2 ATS in their last 9 home games. Maryland has also hit the over in 5 of its last 7 home games.

Opening odds had Miami has a 4-point road favorite and the spread actually climbed to 5.5 before the Miami scandal broke out. Since then, the odds quickly turned in favor of Maryland. The Terps started as a 3.5-point favorite on Sept. 3 and the spread has since climbed to -4. The over/under total hasn’t changed much as it opened at 47.5 points and is now stuck at 45.5 points.
Miami has 14 starters back this season, including seven from an offense that average 421 yards per game. The Hurricanes were strong on the ground, averaging 182 yards per game. In the passing attack, it appears that Stephen Morris will get the start at quarterback for Harris. Morris saw some action last season, throwing for 1,240 yards and seven touchdowns with nine interceptions. On defense, Miami allowed 20.7 points and 173 rushing yards per game in 2010.
Maryland has 14 starters back this season, including the quarterback and leading rusher from the 2010 team. Danny O’Brien threw for 2,438 yards and 22 touchdowns as he helped lead an offense to 32.2 points per game last season. On defense, Maryland was pretty solid, holding opponents to 22.2 points and 352 yards per game. Maryland’s defense also held opponents to 124 rushing yards per game.
In terms of Injuries, Miami has the big suspensions while Maryland also has a pair of players sitting out the game due to suspension. Right tackle Pete DeSouza is doubtful to play for Maryland because of a leg injury.
