Louisville went 7-6 last season and earned a share of the Big East Championship. It was the second straight 7-6 season in two years under coach Charlie Strong. Kentucky was 5-7 last year, it is 11-14 under coach Joker Phillips. Louisville snapped a 4-game losing streak to Kentucky last season with a 24-17 victory.
Trends show that the road team has covered the spread in the last four games in this series and the teams have combined to hit the under in four of their last five meetings in Louisville. Kentucky is just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games in September while Louisville is just 2-6 ATS in their last 8 home games.
According to oddsmakers, Louisville is favored to win this game, as they have odds of -12.5 points against Kentucky. The over/under total has been set at 42 points (View Matchup). Opening odds had Louisville favored by 14.5 points, where it peaked. The odds have consistently been lowering all month, and now sit at 12.5 points.
Louisville has 15 starters back this year, including quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who threw for 2,129 yards and 14 TDs in 2011. The Cardinals averaged only 21.9 points per game last year, but those numbers should inflate this season. Defensively, the Cardinals allowed only 20.1 points and 328 yards per game in 2011. The defense returns five starters on the front seven and three in the secondary, which will make it tough for opponents to move the ball on them.
Kentucky has 12 starters back on this year’s squad, but the Wildcats were one of the worst offensive teams in the country last year, averaging just 15.8 points and 260 yards per game. The offense will return its top four rushers, which may allow Kentucky to better control the pacing of games. Defensively, Kentucky wasn’t too bad, giving up just 24.7 points and 377 yards per game against a tough SEC conference schedule. Kentucky returns five starters on defense, but lose a number of their impact players.
In terms of Injuries, Kentucky running back Josh Clemons is doubtful for the game with a knee injury while receiver Daryl Collins is doubtful with a knee injury as well. Louisville receiver Michaelee Harris is out for the season with a knee injury.
The Public Bets are nearly split down the middle in this game. 51% of the wagers for this game have been put on Louisville -12.5 points against Kentucky.
