WHO WE LIKE: South Carolina. What am I missing here? The Gators lost by 30 last week after their head coach was fired and seemingly gave up on their season. Meanwhile, the Gamecocks were respectable in Athens in a 24-10 loss to the Bulldogs, covering easily as a 24-point underdog. Gus Muschamp also has an opportunity to get back at his former employer, so I don’t know why I would back a Florida team receiving less than a touchdown.
Did you know that Randy Shannon is 11-22 against the spread in his career in conference play? Usually a team receives a small bump when an interim takes over but Shannon is emotionless so I don’t expect the Gators to suddenly respond to his calm manner. I guess Florida’s defense could suddenly show up but its allowed 42-plus points in back-to-back games for the first time since 1917 and has dropped four straight. So yeah, good luck with that.
The Gamecocks are a huge public favorite and I usually shy away from public faves but I can’t in good conscious back a Gators team that laid down a week ago in Columbia, MO. They’re much worse than anyone could imagine. I think the Gamecocks only laying 5.5 is a gift.
