Iowa Hawkeyes Game Notes
Iowa redshirt sophomore QB Spencer Petras completed 15-of-27 passes for 167 yards with a touchdown in a 49-7 win over Michigan State on Saturday. This is the best we’ve seen Petras this season. He didn’t do anything fancy, but he kept the chains moving when he had to and he avoided mistakes after being staked to a lead. Petras remains a big ball of clay: a 6’5 pocket-passer with a rocket-launcher arm but a processor that must speed up with experience.
Minnesota Golden Gophers Game Notes
Minnesota redshirt junior QB Tanner Morgan completed 17-of-26 passes for 231 yards and a touchdown in Saturday’s 41-14 win over Illinois. Boy was somebody happy to see Illinois’ defense today! Morgan (6’2/215) had surprisingly struggled in Minnesota’s first two games, both losses, throwing for only 386 yards on around 60% completions with a 2/1 TD/INT ratio against Michigan and Maryland. Minnesota’s offensive line, which had two high-profile opt-outs, held up much better today than it had in previous weeks, which helped Morgan’s cause too. Minnesota has a big game on deck with another underachieving 1-2 program that wants to get back to .500 – Iowa at TCF Bank Stadium on Friday night.
