Michigan State Spartans Game Notes

Michigan State redshirt junior QB Rocky Lombardi completed 17-of-32 passes for 323 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday’s 27-24 win at Michigan. What a difference a week makes for Lombardi (6’4/225), who after throwing two interceptions in the Spartans’ 38-27 home loss to Rutgers was not responsible for a single turnover Saturday. The redshirt junior, whose quarterback sneak on 4th-and-2 with less than 30 seconds remaining sealed the outcome, also rushed for 19 yards on five carries. Thanks in large part to Lombardi’s play Michigan State averaged 6.41 yards per play, over a yard more than Michigan’s average (5.26). Lombardi has thrown three touchdown passes in each of Michigan State’s two games, and he’ll look to extend that streak to three next week when the Spartans visit Iowa.

Iowa Hawkeyes Game Notes

Iowa senior WR Ihmir Smith-Marsette caught seven passes for 84 yards in a 21-20 loss to Northwestern on Saturday. Smith-Marsette didn’t score, but he was easily the most effective and efficient receiver for either club on Saturday. He had a long gain of 20, and the 6-foot-1, 183-pound wideout helped keep the chains moving early. Iowa’s offense just fell apart late, however, so what could have been a great game ended up being just a good one. Smith-Marsette is a future pro, and he’ll hope the Hawkeyes can avoid an 0-3 start next Saturday against Michigan State.

Michigan State vs. Iowa Betting Prediction

The Spartans are just 2-5-1 against the spread in their last eight trips to Iowa and are 1-6 against the number in their last seven games as an underdog despite knocking off Michigan as a road pup last week. MSU is also 0-4 against the spread in its last four games coming off an ATS win and is 1-4 against the number in its last five games coming off a straight up win. Following a huge win over the Wolverines, this is a perfect time to fade Sparty.
