Michigan falls flat at Notre Dame
Michigan looked rough in its season opener at Notre Dame, losing 24-17. The Wolverines were a 2.5-point favorite at kickoff and the two went under the 47.5-point total. The Wolverines have lost four straight as a program and failed to cover in three of their last four games.
Though Michigan lost by just a touchdown last weekend, Notre Dame controlled the majority of the game. The Irish led 21-3 and held Michigan to just one offensive touchdown. Michigan finished with 307 total yards of offense and only 58 rushing yards on 33 attempts. Karan Higdon rushed for 72 yards on 21 carries while new quarterback Shea Patterson had 227 passing yards on 20 of 30 passing. Despite being a strong defensive team last year, Michigan allowed 132 rushing yards to Notre Dame.
Western Michigan falls at home
The Western Michigan football team got a rare chance to host a Power 5 school in Week 1, when it hosts Syracuse on Friday and lost 55-42. The Broncos were a 5-point underdog but easily hit the over of 65.5 points. The Broncos have lost three straight and failed to cover in their last two.
In the loss to the Orange, Western Michigan trailed 34-7 at halftime, but managed to make a game of it in the second half. The two teams combined for nearly 1,200 yards of offense, as WMU had 621 and Syracuse had 560. WMU quarterback Jon Wassink threw for 379 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions on 19 of 36 passing. D’Wayne Eskridge caught eight passes for 240 yards and two scores while LeVante Bellamy rushed for 120 yards and two scores on 11 carries. Defensively, WMU gave up 334 rushing yards to the Orange in the loss.
College Football Betting Trends
Michigan
The Wolverines are 3-1-1 against the spread in their last five games following a failed cover, but they have failed to cover in four straight non-conference games.
Western Michigan
The Broncos have covered the spread in five of their last six against Big Ten opponents and in 12 of their last 16 games in September.
Prediction:
Michigan and Jim Harbaugh have been taking a lot of heat this week after a lackluster offensive showing in a big game once again. I expect the Wolverines to look a lot better this week because they are facing a weak defense in WMU. It won’t mean that Michigan has fixed its offensive issues, just be a mirage because they will face a bad defense. I think the Michigan defense should be able to do enough to keep the Broncos in check to cover. Look for the Wolverines try and send a statement in this game.
College Football Prediction: Michigan -27.5
