Notre Dame Fighting Irish Game Notes
Louisville redshirt senior QB Ian Book completed just 11-of-19 passes for 107 yards and ran for a touchdown with 47 yards rushing in a 12-7 win over Louisville on Saturday. This was not an aesthetically pleasing game; especially if you like offense. Notre Dame’s offense stalled in the red zone three times in the first half, and a fake field goal on that third try didn’t come close to reaching paydirt. Book (6’0/212) was under a surprising amount of pressure, and also was hurt by some poor play by receivers. With the Fighting Irish trailing 7-6, Book showed off his scrambling ability and ran it in from 13 yards out to give Notre Dame the 12-7 lead and ultimately a victory. It’s also worth pointing out that the winds were swirling in South Bend, but, not a great game for the senior signal-caller. Book and the Fighting Irish are 4-0, and they can get to 5-0 next Saturday with a win over Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh Panthers Game Notes
Pitt redshirt freshman QB Joey Yellen completed 22-of-46 passes for 277 yards and a touchdown in a 31-19 loss to Miami on Saturday. Yellen (6’3/220) filled in for the injured Kenny Pickett and performed well considering he was facing a stout Miami defense. His lone touchdown pass came on a 1-yard strike to TE Daniel Moraga in the third-quarter with Pitt still clinging to life. Though he redshirted last season, Yellen still completed 28-of-44 passes for 292 yards and four touchdowns when he played for Arizona State. Pitt hosts the ACC’s newest member, Notre Dame, next Saturday.
