Notre Dame struggles with Ball State
Notre Dame opened its season with a big 24-17 win over Michigan in the opener, but then had to grind out a 24-16 win over Ball State last week in what was somewhat of a predictable letdown performance. The Irish are 1-1 against the spread while hitting the under in both games. ND is just 2-5 against the spread in its last seven games.
The Notre Dame defense has been pretty stout so far this season, allowing just 16.5 points and 328 yards per game. On offense, the Irish are putting up 24 points and 358 yards per game. Quarterback Brandon Wimbush has thrown for 467 yards and one touchdown, but has four interceptions. He has rushed for 52 yards as well. Miles Boykin is the leading receiver with 147 yards on seven catches. Tony Jones Jr. and Jafar Armstrong have combined for 207 rushing yards and five touchdowns.
Vanderbilt off to good start
Vanderbilt has gotten off to a rare 2-0 start for the program by picking up lopsided wins over Middle Tennessee and Nevada. The Commodores have covered the spread in both wins while hitting the under in each contest. Vandy has covered the spread in three straight games, dating back to the 2017 season.
The Vanderbilt defense has looked really good so far, allowing just 8.5 points and 272 yards per game. Their run defense is allowing just 75 yards per contest. On offense, Vandy is putting up 38 points and 407 yards per game. Kyle Shurmur has thrown for 428 yards and four touchdowns to lead the offense while Ke’Shawn Vaughn is the leading rusher with 130 yards. Kalija Lipscomb has caught 14 passes for 145 yards and three touchdowns.
College Football Betting Trends
Notre Dame
Notre Dame is just 1-5 against the spread in its last six against a winning team and 0-4 ATS in its last four after a win.
Vanderbilt
Vanderbilt has covered the spread in four straight non-conference games and nine of their last 12 following a win of more than 20 points.
Prediction:
While Notre Dame is certainly a step up for Vanderbilt this week, the Commodores are coming in with nothing to lose. They already have a 2-0 start in their back pocket and nobody expects them to beat the Irish. Notre Dame hasn’t been able to pull away from either opponent this year and this game could be a real defensive battle. The Irish seem like a team that play down to competition frequently and I think this game will be another close one.
