Orange Bowl spread continues to climb

The point spread for today’s Orange Bowl continues to climb in favor of Oklahoma, which will take on Clemson at 4:00PM ET.

Even though only 52% of public bettors are siding with the Sooners, Oklahoma is now a 4.5-point favorite for today’s Orange Bowl according to oddsmakers from online sports book RealBet.eu. The total is also on the move, dropping from the opening number of 65 down to 63.5.

Clemson finished the regular season with a 13-0 record but was just 6-7 at the betting window in 2015. Oklahoma was 11-1 straight up, losing its only game to Texas in the Red River Rivalry. The Sooners were also an impressive 9-3 against the spread this season.

When favored this season, Oklahoma was 8-3 against the spread, winning by an average margin of 26.4 points and covering the number by an average margin of +8.8. This will be the first time Clemson is an underdog this season, but the Tigers are 13-10 against the spread in an underdog role since Dabo Swinney became head coach in 2008. In those 23 games, the Tigers lost by an average margin of just -3.6 points.

The Sooners had one of the most prolific offenses in the nation this season, finishing second in points per game (45.8), sixth in total yards (542.9), 15th in rushing yards (235.0) and 17th in passing (307.9). Their defense also ranked 22nd in points allowed (20.8), 28th in total yards (350.7) and 31st in passing yards allowed (201.5).

As for the Tigers, they averaged 38.5 points per game, which ranked 16th in the nation. They also finished 11th in total yards (510.6), 23rd in rushing (221.8) and 24th in passing (288.8). Defensively, they ranked fifth against the pass (166.9), seventh in total yards (296.2), 19th in points allowed (20.2) and 24th in rushing yards surrendered (24.0).
