Oregon Ducks Game Notes
Oregon redshirt sophomore QB Tyler Shough ran for 78 yards and a score while completing 17-of-26 passes for 227 yards with a touchdown and an interception in a 35-14 rout of Stanford on Saturday. Shough is taking over for Justin Herbert — who is currently impressing in the NFL for the Chargers — and the 6-foot-5, 195-pound signal-caller beat out Boston College transfer Anthony Brown for the starting gig. It wasn’t a perfect effort, but he showed off his dual-threat ability with a nine-yard stroll into the end zone to extend the Ducks’ lead to 28-7 in the third. His first touchdown pass on the new year was a five-yard connection with DJ Johnson a quarter earlier. Shough and Oregon will look to move to 2-0 next Saturday against Washington State.
Washington State Cougars Game Notes
Washington State freshman QB Jayden de Laura completed 18-of-33 passing attempts for 227 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in a 38-28 win over Oregon State on Saturday. De Laura (6’0/195) won the starting gig in this shortened offseason, and it wasn’t hard to understand why watching him on Saturday night. While there were some fits of inaccuracy and the pocket presence will need work — what freshman doesn’t need to improve on both? — he showed a dual-threat that hasn’t been at Washington State in a very long time. His rushing score upped Washington State’s lead to 21-7, and the Cougars were able to hang on for the season-opening victory. Things will get tougher for the Cougs and de Laura, as they have to face conference-favorite Oregon next Saturday.
