Seattle,Wa – The secondary violations committed by new Washington football coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff in their first month of recruiting usually result in nothing more than administrative reprimands.

That is the word from the NCAA official to whom the Huskies have self-reported two violations in the last two weeks, Pac-10 associate commissioner for compliance Mike Matthews.
“Secondary violations are very common,” Matthews said Friday night in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.
Matthews refused to comment specifically about Washington’s having two violations in two weeks, citing a conference policy on confidentiality.

The NCAA does not permit coaches to have off-campus contact with recruits until July 1 prior to their senior year. It is also forbidden to have contact with recruits in the presence of media.
Last week, Washington reported to the Pac-10 that Sarkisian and his staff simulated a game-day entrance during an on-campus visit by a recruit, specifically smoke and players running out of the Husky Stadium tunnel. An NCAA bylaw prohibits prospects from participating in any type of “game-day simulations” during a visit.
Matthews and his staff are reviewing the infractions. They will then forward the matters to the conference’s compliance and enforcement committee in the coming months. Its four members, which include faculty-athletics liaisons and a representative from the league’s athletic directors committee, will recommend to Pac-10 executives corrective measures they see fit for Washington.
“Generally speaking, secondary violations result in a revisiting of the rules and a letter of admonishment,” Matthews said.

The Huskies were the only winless team in major college football last year, and coach Tyrone Willingham was fired. Sarkisian, a first-time head coach, is the UW’s fourth since 2002.
