Penn State Nittany Lions Game Notes
Freshmen running backs Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen have been turning heads in training camp. Singleton (6’0/215) and Allen (5’11/225) are being counted on to revive a Penn State run game that hasn’t been the same since Journey Brown medically retired in 2020. Last year the Nittany Lions longest touchdown run was seven yards while finishing last in the Big Ten in yards after contact. When HC James Franklin was asked about the duo, he was effusive in his praise saying “They’ve been really good, really both of them. Obviously there’s been a lot of conversations about Nick Singleton, but him and Kaytron, there’s a buzz within our program about those two guys and what they’re doing.” With Singleton considered the top 2023 RB in the nation, and Allen ranking as the 13th best back according to 247Sports, Penn State is a virtual lock to surpass their woeful 108 YPG average in 2021. They open at Purdue on Thursday, September 1 in a prime time showcase.
Purdue Boilermakers Game Notes
Purdue redshirt junior WR Charlie Jones (undisclosed) is not practicing in fall camp. Jones (6’0/188) transferred in from Iowa and emerged this past season in the receiving core as an impactful deep threat by averaging 15.4 yards per catch and a team-long 72-yard reception. Where he really excelled was in the return game as he was the only player nationally to average more than seven yards on at least 30 punt returns and one of only three players to average more than 25 yards on 25 or more kickoff returns. He did some work on the sideline, but was standing stationary while an assistant threw passes to him. Hopefully Jones can kick the injury bug and get on the field soon.
