According to oddsmakers from online sports book Mybookie.ag, the Mountaineers are 7.5-point favorites over the Bobcats in this evening’s bowl matchup. As for the total, it currently sits at 55 points.

Ohio is banged up at the quarterback position, although J.D. Spraque will start for the Bobcats after leading them to wins over Ball State and Northern Illinois. Coach Frank Solich didn’t rule out Derrius Vick (ankle) from playing, however, so Ohio could be looking at a quarterback rotation today.

The MAC has been terrible in bowl games, going 32-50 historically, and Ohio could add to that losing record after today. The Bobcats are allowing 157 yards per game on the ground this season and 4.8 yards per carry. The Mountaineers, meanwhile, are averaging 268.8 rushing yards per game, which ranks sixth nationally.

Appalachian State’s only two losses this season came against Sun Belt champion Arkansas State and Clemson, which is the No. 1 team in the nation. What’s interesting about that loss to Clemson is that even though the Mountaineers failed to win and cover in a 41-10 loss, oddsmakers listed the spread at only 18.5.

The game was at Death Valley and yet Appalachian State was an underdog of less than three touchdowns? Goes to show you how much oddsmakers respected the Mountaineers’ talent level coming into the season.

Ohio enters the bowl season on a roll having won three straight, but Appalachian State has better overall talent and will be motivated to win in its first bowl game appearance. Lay the points.
