San Jose State Spartans Game Notes
San Jose State senior QB Nick Starkel completed 34-of-47 passes for 467 yards and five touchdowns in Saturday’s 38-21 win over New Mexico. It’s taken Starkel a while to bounce around and find a real home at QB. He started his career at Texas A&M before trying a stint at Arkansas, ultimately ending with him now at SJSU. With the Spartans, Starkel has been electric. UNM are not the toughest opponents, but Starkel was a monster against them, finding as many shots down the field as he was picking up consistent gains underneath. That level of consistency had seldom been seen out of Starkel at his other stops. On top of that, Starkel scored all five touchdowns for SJSU on Saturday. SJSU are now 2-0 with San Diego State on deck next week.
San Diego State Aztecs Game Notes
San Diego State redshirt sophomore QB Carson Baker completed 18-of-27 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday’s 38-7 win over Utah State. All Baker needed to be on Saturday was competent. The run game was rolling and the defense was more than holding up its end of the bargain. Thankfully for SDSU, Baker was just that. He did not find any explosive plays or try to make much happen, but he served to complement the run game with short completions and by protecting the ball. This should continue to be SDSU’s formula for winning.
