(The Spread) – The South Carolina Gamecocks may have the best running back and wide receiver in the country, but will that be enough for the Gamecocks to win the National Title?
South Carolina is coming off its first ever SEC East Division championship last season, as the Gamecocks went 9-5 in 2010, losing in the SEC Championship. This season, with Steve Spurrier in his seventh season as coach, South Carolina has 13 starters back, including the two skill positions.
According to oddsmakers, South Carolina has 20/1 odds to win the 2012 BCS National Championship. The Gamecocks have 9/2 odds to win the SEC Championship and 9/4 odds to repeat at East Division champs. South Carolina has over/under odds of 9 wins for the season as well.

The South Carolina offense will be led by a tandem of Marcus Lattimore and Alshon Jeffery. Lattimore is a sophomore running back that rushed for 1,197 yards and 17 touchdowns last season while Jeffery is a junior receiver that caught 88 passes for 1,517 yards and 9 touchdowns in 2010. Lattimore has 7/1 odds to win the Heisman Trophy this season while Jeffery has 80/1 odds. Stephen Garcia is back at quarterback to get the ball to both players. Garcia was suspended twice during the offseason, but will be the starter this season. South Carolina also has six starter back on defense. The Gamecocks gave up 23 points and over 350 yards per game last season.
South Carolina has never won the national championship in football and has just one conference title to its credit, which came back in 1969. The Gamecocks won 9 games for the first time in 2010 since 2001. Spurrier has never had a losing record with South Carolina but the 9-5 season was the best in his six seasons. This season, South Carolina faces Clemson and Navy in non-conference play. In the SEC, the Gamecocks will have to head to Georgia and Arkansas while hosting Florida and Auburn.
In terms of the spread, South Carolina was 7-7 in 2010. It was the seventh time in nine seasons that the Gamecocks were .500 or lower against the spread. South Carolina went 0-2 against the spread on turf last season as well. When it comes to the over/under, South Carolina hit the over in 9 of 14 lined games, including 7 of 9 home games.
