South Carolina Game Notes
South Carolina’s leading rusher MarShawn Lloyd has missed the past three games with a quad contusion and he’s officially listed as questionable for Saturday’s clash with Clemson. Junior running back Jaheim Bell has gotten the bulk of the work in Lloyd’s stead, culminating in last week’s Tennessee game where Bell recorded 121 scrimmage yards (82 rushing, 39 receiving) and 2 receiving touchdowns. Bell should see around 15 touches if Lloyd is unable to play.
Gamecocks quarterback Spencer Rattler had the best game of his South Carolina career last weekend against Tennessee as he threw for 438 yards, 6 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions. Rattler was a highly-rated recruit coming out of high school and may have found his stride at South Carolina with his spectacular performance last weekend. If he plays exceptionally again, the Gamecocks have a good shot at covering this game.
Clemson Game Notes
Clemson quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei has been much-maligned this season. He’s played much better the past two weeks in Clemson’s games against Louisville and Miami, posting a QBR of 78 or higher in both contests. Uiagalelei had 15 carries and a rushing touchdown in each of those games, and Clemson’s coaching staff may dial up some more QB runs to take advantage of his athleticism on Saturday.
The key player on Clemson’s defense may be sophomore Barrett Carter. Carter played well in Clemson’s 31-16 win over Louisville 2 weeks ago, recording 8 total tackles, 2 sacks, an interception, and a pass defended in that contest. He’ll likely need to make some plays either rushing the passer or in coverage to ensure that Clemson wins by more than 2 touchdowns on Saturday.
South Carolina vs. Clemson Betting Trends
South Carolina is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games after gaining over 450 total yards in their previous game.
South Carolina is 5-2-1 ATS in their last 8 non-conference games.
Clemson is 2-9 ATS in their last 11 non-conference games.
The road team is 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings between South Carolina and Clemson.
South Carolina vs. Clemson Betting Prediction
The key to this game for South Carolina will be keeping quarterback Spencer Rattler upright. The Gamecocks are 2-3 in games in which Rattler has been sacked 3 times or more. South Carolina will need to either keep players in to block Clemson defenders or get the ball out of Rattler’s hands quickly with shorter passes. They could also mix in some running plays to slow down Clemson’s pass rush. Spencer Rattler has a 9-0 touchdown pass-to-interception ratio in his last 3 games, which means he’s trending in the right direction. I think Spencer Rattler has another good game and South Carolina scores enough points in this game to keep it within two touchdowns. I’ll take the Gamecocks and the points.
