Who is the Public Backing?
Believe it or not, public bettors are backing the underdog Gamecocks at a 60% clip. It’s early, but apparently bettors aren’t digging laying 24.5 points with a Georgia team that is 6-2 against the spread this season.
Key Betting Trends
The favorite is 6-1 against the spread in the last seven meetings between these two teams while the home team has covered in four of the last five meetings.
OUR PREDICTION: Heading into last weekend’s matchup with Georgia, Florida had given up a total of four touchdowns in its first six games of the season. The Gators surrendered that many touchdowns in their 42-7 loss to the Dawgs in that game alone. Sony Michel scored on runs of 74 and 45 yards, while Elijah Holyfield scored on a 39-yard run and Nick Chubb scored on a six-yard run. The Bulldogs’ rushing yards more than doubled the 143.3 per game that Florida allowed on average in its first six games.
Granted, South Carolina has tightended things up defensively since the end of September. In the last weekend of September, the Gamecocks allowed 237 rushing yards to Texas A&M. Since that point, they held Arkansas to 106 yards, Tennessee to 120, and Vanderbilt to 107 in their last three games. But Georgia is a different beast.
Given the big-play ability of the Bulldogs’ rushing game, coupled with a low total, I can’t take the under in this matchup. It’s too much of a risk. Georgia will present South Carolina with its biggest challenge, but sophomore quarterback Jake Bentley controls an offense that has averaged 32.3 points over its last three games. Plus, the Gamecocks are one of the hottest teams in the SEC, coming off a 34-27 victory over Vanderbilt to improve to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
South Carolina is hot and confident, and Georgia has national title aspirations. I see this being an entertaining game, not a defensive slugfest. The over is 4-0 in the last four meetings between these two teams in Athens and 4-0 in the last four meetings overall.
