Stanford still in playoff hunt?
Can No. 7 Stanford cling on to slim playoff hopes tonight when the Cardinal take on No. 24 USC in the Pac-12 Championship?
According to oddsmakers at RealBets, Stanford is favored in this game, as the Cardinal are getting odds of -4.5 points against USC. The over/under total for tonight’s championship has been set at 58.5 points. These two meet tonight at 7:45PM ET from Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, CA. The game airs live on ESPN.
Stanford (10-2, 8-4 ATS) is among eight teams currently listed with odds to win the national championship this season. However, of the eight teams, Stanford has the longest odds to win at 50/1. The Cardinal don’t have a lot of marquee wins this year due to the Pac-12 beating itself up a great deal in conference play. The Cardinal also have losses to Oregon and Northwestern. In order for Stanford to sneak into the playoffs, they likely need a win along with losses by Clemson and Alabama in their respective championship games, and that may not even do it.
As far as tonight’s game goes, Stanford already holds a 41-31 win over USC (8-4, 6-6 ATS) back on Sept. 19. However, that was when the Trojans were still coached by Steve Sarkisian. USC has won five of its last six coming into this game and has a new head coach in Clay Helton. In the first meeting, Stanford had 474 total yards to USC’s 427, but the big key was Stanford controlled the clock, having the ball for nearly 40 minutes while the Trojans had it for just 20. Kevin Hogan led Stanford in the win with 279 yards and two touchdowns on 18 of 23 passing. Cody Kessler answered for USC with 272 yards and three scores on 25 of 32 passing.
