There might be a quarterback controversy brewing in Lubbock. All three of Texas Tech’s quarterbacks (Behren Morton, Donovan Smith, and Tyler Shough) played in the Red Raiders’ 45-17 home loss to Baylor last weekend. They all threw interceptions as the Texas Tech offense sputtered, mustering only 159 passing yards. Tyler Shough was initially named the team’s starter in August but he promptly got hurt, ceding the job to Donovan Smith. The plan was for Shough to be available for this weekend’s TCU game, and he appears to be the frontrunner to start this game for the Red Raiders. Shough threw for 154 yards on only 10 passing attempts in Texas Tech’s season-opening win over Murray State. His talent could provide Texas Tech with the spark it needs to cover this contest against an undefeated TCU team on Saturday.
TCU Game Notes
TCU doesn’t have any questions about their starting quarterback. Senior Max Duggan hasn’t been a part of the Heisman Trophy conversation, but maybe he should be. Duggan has thrown multiple touchdowns in every game he’s started and his touchdown pass-to-interception ratio is elite at 22-2. His QBR of 83.9 ranks 11th nationally, and his passer rating of 182.5 ranks 4th in the country. He’s been great at engineering the Horned Frogs’ dynamic offense.
TCU’s pass defense is led by linebacker Dee Winters and safety Bud Clark. Winters is 4th in the Big 12 with 4.5 sacks and 4th on the team with 39 total tackles on the season. He’s added a pass breakup and a fumble recovery in addition to those numbers. Bud Clark is tied for the Big 12 lead with 3 interceptions on the campaign. He’s intercepted a pass in each of TCU’s last three games. He’ll look to make it four on Saturday.

For TCU, this is the ultimate look-ahead spot or trap game. They play at Texas next weekend in a massively important night game on ABC. It’s possible that the Horned Frogs take a 4-4 Texas Tech team too lightly. Because of that, I’ll take the Red Raiders and the points.
