Texas Game Notes
True freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers will make his much-anticipated return against Oklahoma on Saturday. Ewers injured his non-throwing shoulder during the first half of the Alabama game in week 2 and has been out of the Longhorns’ lineup ever since. Ewers was the #1 quarterback recruit in the class of 2022 and the Southlake, TX native is one of the most highly-touted prospects in Texas history. Before he was injured against the Crimson Tide, Quinn Ewers was lighting up the Alabama defense. He was 9 for 12 for 134 yards with a 96.8 QBR before being knocked out of the game. Texas ended up losing that game 20-19, but many believe that the outcome would have been different if Ewers had played the entire contest. He’ll get a shot to showcase his ability against an Oklahoma defense that is 94th out of 131 FBS schools in yards allowed per game.
Oklahoma State Game Notes
Sooners head coach Brent Venables and Oklahoma might be in big trouble. They lost their first two Big 12 games to Kansas State and TCU by giving up 96 points combined. They permitted 668 yards against TCU last week alone and got blown out by a score of 55-24. As bad as that result was, the outlook may be worse going forward. Sooners quarterback Dillon Gabriel was knocked out of the TCU game with a head injury, and it’s looking like he won’t play against Texas on Saturday. If Gabriel can’t play, Oklahoma might be forced to employ a quarterback rotation made up of Pittsburgh transfer Davis Beville and walk-on junior college transfer General Booty. General Booty is the nephew of former USC quarterback John David Booty. As bad as things have been for Oklahoma, they might be about to get worse on Saturday.

This is a worst-case scenario for Oklahoma and their new head coach Brent Venables. The Sooners opened their conference schedule by losing to Kansas State and TCU and in the process, they lost their starting quarterback and are forced to play one or more inexperienced QBs in a rivalry game. The fact that Texas gets their own stud quarterback back in action for this game only makes things worse. Texas’s defense is a bit underrated too, as they’re 17th in the country in opponent yards allowed per play (4.6). I think the return of Quinn Ewers for the Longhorns and the lack of Dillon Gabriel for the Sooners is the difference in this game. I think Texas wins and covers the spread.
