Troy no slouch
Troy had a tremendous 2017 season, going 11-2 with a Sun Belt Conference title. They finished the season on a 7-game win streak and a bowl win over North Texas. The Trojans were 6-7 against the spread and 9-4 with the under. Neal Brown steps into his fourth season as head coach of Troy.
The Trojans put up 31.5 points per game on offense last season while holding opponents to just 18.5 per game. This year, the team has to replace their strong quarterback. Brandon Silvers threw for 3,290 yards and 17 touchdowns. Junior quarterback Kaleb Barker will start the season. He had just 13 pass attempts in 2017. Troy also lost its leading rusher, Jordan Chunn, but does return receivers Deondre Douglas and Damion Willis. Those two combined for 90 receptions for 1,248 yards and seven touchdowns.
Boise State still non-Power 5 power
Boise State put up 11 wins again in 2017, including a Mountain West Conference championship. The Broncos also earned a bowl win over Oregon as well. Boise State was 9-5 against the spread and 8-6 with the under. Bryan Harsin enters his fifth season as head coach of Boise State. He is 42-12 with the program so far.
The Broncos averaged 32.5 points per game on offense in the 2017 season over 14 games while allowing 22.9 points per contest on defense. Quarterback Brett Rypien returns for his senior season. He threw for 2,877 yards and 16 touchdowns a year ago. He loses his favorite target in Cedrick Wilson, who posted an impressive 1,511 receiving yards in 2017. Alexander Mattison rushed for 1,086 yards and 12 touchdowns. He returns this year which could see more of a focus on the run game this year.
College Football Betting Trends
Troy
Troy is just 1-7 against the spread in their last eight home games and 2-5 ATS in their last seven non-conference games.
Boise State
Boise State is 6-1 against the spread in their last seven road games and 20-6 against the spread in their last 26 against the Sun Belt Conference.
Prediction:
I think this game will be ugly and low scoring, but I do think Boise State finds a way to cover. Troy has not been able to get many of those marquee wins at home in non-conference and the Broncos have a pretty veteran team that has been able to win in tough road environments. I see Troy struggling to move the ball on Boise with a new quarterback, while the Broncos manufacture some scoring drives at key times. That will allow them to win by more than 10.
College Football Prediction: Boise State -10
