UCLA names Rosen its QB

LOS ANGELES, CA (TheSpread) – The UCLA Bruins have named their new starting quarterback and it is somewhat of a surprising choice.

Head coach Jim Mora announced on Wednesday that true freshman Josh Rosen will take over the duties under center for UCLA, beating junior Jerry Neuheisel for the job.

“When you’re recruiting the No. 1-ranked quarterback in the country, you kind of hope that he lives up to that billing,” Mora told ESPN of the decision. “We haven’t played one single snap of real football yet, but at this point he’s living up to that billing. He’s been here for winter, spring, summer so (the players) know him. It’s not like he just got here two, three weeks ago. Being an early admit has really helped and I think what has happened over the course of the last few months (his teammates have) come to know him, like him and respect him.”

According to oddsmakers at BetDSI, UCLA is currently listed with 40/1 odds to win the college football playoffs this season. The Bruins open the season next Saturday and are listed as a 17-point favorite against Virginia. The over/under total for the game has been set at 53 points.

Rosen was a standout QB in high school, as he threw for 8,473 yards and 90 touchdowns at St. John Bosco High in California. He enrolled in January at UCLA and has been able to impress the coaches and earn the starting job. Neuheisel saw limited action in his first two years. He is 37 of 52 passing in his two years for 318 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
