Who is the Public Backing?
It’s only midweek so things could change, but as of this writing, Utah is receiving the majority of the bets online. The Utes are just 4-4 straight up this season but are 5-2-1 against the spread. The Bruins, meanwhile, have a 4-4 record on the year and are just 2-6 at the betting window.
Key Betting Trends
The road team has covered in five straight meetings between these two teams but the Bruins are just 2-5 against the spread in their last seven games versus the Utes.
OUR PREDICTION: Rosen is dealing with multiple undisclosed injuries suffered last weekend in UCLA’s loss to Washington. If the future NFL draft pick can’t play, the redshirt freshman Modster will draw the start.
If Modster does start, then this matchup will feature an inexperienced quarterback for UCLA and a struggling one for Utah. Sophomore signal-caller Tyler Huntley has struggled since returning from a shoulder injury that sidelined him for two games. In those two games since the injury, he’s completed just 56.4 percent of his passes after throwing at a 73.3-percent clip during the first four games of the year. The Utes are still trying to work the kinks out under new offensive coordinator Troy Taylor and are averaging just 21.4 points per game in Pac-12 play.
Granted, neither of these teams is playing defense at the moment, with Utah allowing 5.6 yards per carry in conference play and UCLA surrendering 37.6 points per game, which ranks 119th in the nation. Still, the under is 5-1 in the last six meetings between these two teams and given the current situations at quarterback for both teams, I see the game on Friday night being low-scoring.
