When the two teams meet in September, Virginia Tech will have a new quarterback under center. That’s because Jerod Evans is expected to be selected on the third day of the NFL draft this season. Redshirt freshman Josh Jackson will compete with true freshman Hendon Hooker and junior A.J. Bush for the starting job in 2017.

West Virginia will also need to replace not only quarterback Skyler Howard, but receiver Shelton Gibson. With Howard gone, Florida transfer Will Grier is the frontrunner to win the starting quarterback job, although redshirt sophomore Chris Chugunov and redshirt freshman Cody Sanders will also be in the mix.

Virginia Tech is currently listed as a 50/1 long shot to win the 2018 College Football National Championship while West Virginia has odds of 65/1. Alabama remains the favorites to win it all at 9/2, while Ohio State is 13/2 and USC is 15/2.
