Graham Mertz went 17-of-32 passing for 206 yards and a 1:2 TD:INT ratio during Saturday’s 34-10 loss to Illinois. He also lost 22 yards over seven carries. Mertz registered perhaps his worst overall outing of the 2022 season Saturday, tossing multiple interceptions for the first time this year and the fourth time in his career. After going 4-of-4 passing for 54 yards and a touchdown on the opening drive against Illinois, the third-year starter finished with a 53.1 completion percentage on his season-high 32 passing attempts. Mertz has combined for 300 passing yards and a 2:3 TD:INT ratio while completing 28 of his 52 passing attempts over the past two weeks. The junior will look to avoid turning the ball over for the fifth straight game heading into Wisconsin’s next matchup at Northwestern on Oct. 8.
Northwestern Wildcats Game Notes
Ryan Hilinski went 15-of-37 passing for 210 yards and a 1:1 TD:INT ratio during Saturday’s 17-7 loss on the road against Penn State. He also lost one fumble and 10 yards over six carries. Hilinski could not get things going until the second half of Saturday’s loss, failing to complete a pass until the 10-minute mark of the second quarter. As a result, the junior transfer finished with a season-low 40.5 completion percentage and a mediocre 5.7 yards per attempt. Hilinski did find wide receiver Jacob Gill for a wide-open 47-yard receiving touchdown in the third quarter, but he was later stopped short of the goal line on a quarterback sneak with 12 minutes remaining. The passer’s next game will come at home against division rival Wisconsin on Oct. 8.
