CALIFORNIA, Pa. (AP) – A sixth football player from a state university in western Pennsylvania has been arrested in a beating outside an off-campus restaurant that left a man with severe brain trauma.
Police say 20-year-old Shelby Wilkerson of Harrisburg, a freshman linebacker at California University of Pennsylvania, turned himself in Saturday. University spokeswoman Christine Kindl says he was immediately suspended.
Online court documents don’t list an attorney for Wilkerson.
Interim president Geraldine Jones called the additional arrest ”disheartening news” but said ”everyone involved in this incident should be held accountable for their actions.”
Police say the players attacked the victim as he tried to stop an argument between his girlfriend and a player early Thursday, then fled yelling ”Football strong!”
The university forfeited Saturday’s football game against Gannon, jeopardizing the Division II team’s best season in three years.
