FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) -Arkansas named its home football field after outgoing athletic director and former football coach Frank Broyles at halftime of Saturday night’s game against South Carolina.
Broyles is retiring at the end of the year, his 50th with the school. He was hired as the football coach in December of 1957 and remained at the helm through the 1976 season. He has remained athletic director ever since, but he announced in February he was stepping down.
At halftime, the Arkansas band spelled out “Coach” then lined up in its traditional “A” at the north end zone. Broyles walked out and was joined near midfield by dozens of well wishers. A number of former players were on hand, including Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
After a brief video tribute, a curtain was pulled aside above the south end zone, revealing the words “FRANK BROYLES FIELD” – and Broyles then led the crowd in a “Pig Sooie” call.
The 82-year-old Broyles playfully high-stepped his way into the end zone as he left the field.
A building at the north end zone that houses athletic department offices is already named after Broyles.
The Razorbacks won’t play in Fayetteville again this season. They have one more home game left, but it’s in Little Rock.
Jeff Long is taking over as Arkansas’ athletic director.
