(STATS) – Campbell is hoping its first trip around the Big South Conference will go as well as the initial leap to the FCS scholarship level this season.
At 5-1, the Fighting Camels are off to their best start through six games since the program restarted in 2008. On Saturday, the former members of the non-scholarship Pioneer Football League head to Monmouth (4-2) for their first Big South game.
Campbell has only lost to an FBS team, Coastal Carolina, but the conference schedule is challenging. Monmouth’s veteran team is one of two in the Big South that qualified for the FCS playoffs last season (third-ranked and defending champion Kennesaw State also did). The Hawks have won eight straight home games at Kessler Stadium.
“It’s going to be a tough opening to the Big South Conference,” Camels coach Mike Minter said on “This Week in Campbell Football.” “I wish they’d done us a little bit better break than that, but it is what it is. We’ll go up to New Jersey and give it all that we’ve got. Hopefully, it falls our way.”
Campbell is ready for the challenge, including being rested following a bye week. Dual-threat quarterback Daniel Smith runs the offense at a high level and fifth-year senior linebacker Jack Ryan is becoming a candidate for Big South defensive player of the year. The Camels are a conference-best plus-nine in turnover margin, while Monmouth sits last at minus-five.
Heading into their first all-time meeting, Campbell and Monmouth have one common nonconference opponent this season, Wagner. Monmouth posted a 54-47 over the Seahawks and Campbell notched a 49-3 victory.
