(STATS) – If Southland Conference champ UIW doesn’t make that FCS playoffs on Sunday, the talk of a “snub” should be less than with other disappointed teams.
If the Cardinals are left out of the 24-team field, that will mean Nicholls beats Southeastern Louisiana Thursday night to claim a share of the Southland title, but also the conference’s automatic bid because it holds the tiebreaker over UIW with a head-to-head win.
It also will mean the 24th-ranked Cardinals (6-4) didn’t earn an at-large bid because they’ve fallen shy of seven Division I wins, which is preferred by the NCAA selection committee.
The Cardinals could have had a shot to earn a seventh win. They were scheduled to host North Alabama Thursday night, but in September the school canceled the game to play a third FBS opponent, Iowa State, Dec. 1 in Ames.
The decision has left UIW idle this week. If Nicholls loses and the Cardinals qualify for the playoffs, the Iowa State game will not be played.
