CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) -Clemson reserve running back Ray Ray McElrathbey had successful surgery to repair a torn knee ligament.
McElrathbey, who took custody of his 12-year-old brother last year, had the operation on his injured anterior cruciate ligament Friday and was recovering well, school spokesman Tim Bourret said Wednesday.
McElrathbey started taking care of his brother, Fahmarr, because of their mother’s problems with drugs. He tore his ACL on Aug. 16, ending his season before the No. 20 Tigers (2-0) played their first game.
McElrathbey, a redshirt sophomore from Atlanta, is expected to recover in time for next season.
McElrathbey started last fall as a defensive back. He played on special teams and made six tackles in 13 games, then was shifted to running back.
After he gained custody of his brother, an NCAA waiver was approved allowing Clemson’s coaches, staff and their family members to help the younger McElrathbey get to school.
The NCAA also agreed that Clemson could set up a trust fund for the McElrathbeys, where money could be donated to help them.
