ALPINE, Texas (AP) -Sul Ross State coach Steve Wright has resigned after a season that gained national attention with 59-year-old linebacker Mike Flynt’s storybook return to college football.
Wright, who stepped down Thursday, had a 15-44 record in six seasons at the rural Division III school, including 5-5 this year when Flynt returned to use a final season of eligibility remaining from 1971. Flynt was kicked off the team back then and told friends he always regretted it, leading them to encourage him to return.
Injuries kept Flynt sidelined through the first five games, then he blocked on field goals the rest of the year. He also played linebacker late in the season finale.
“There comes a time, especially in this profession, that if you honestly look at your individual production, that leadership of a program needs tweaking,” Wright said in a statement.
