EUGENE, Ore. (AP) -Suddenly, that trip to Ann Arbor doesn’t seem so daunting.
While Oregon was beating Houston 48-27 on Saturday it was announced on the public address system No. 5 Michigan had been upset by Appalachian State, 34-32.
The crowd roared at the loss for Oregon’s next opponent.
“We were all blown away. We couldn’t say anything about it,” Ducks running back Jeremiah Johnson said. “We were pretty much speechless.”
Now the Ducks are thinking that either the Wolverines aren’t as good as their ranking, or they’re going to be out for redemption when Oregon visits on Saturday.
“We want the best game. If the loss makes them fight more, then that’s good, because we’ll fight even more,” linebacker Jerome Boyd said. “They don’t want to lose like we don’t want to lose.”
Behind quarterback Dennis Dixon, Oregon treated Houston as if it was a warmup for Michigan.
Dixon established his double treat credentials rushing for 141 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown run, and completed nine of 15 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns.
Anthony Alridge had 22 carries for 205 yards and a touchdown for Houston (0-1). Alridge also caught three passes for 88 yards and a score.
With the score tied at 20, the Cougars appeared to be on the verge of taking the lead, but Case Keenum’s pass into the end zone for Perry McDaniel was intercepted by Patrick Chung.
The Ducks, who ended last season with four straight losses, then went ahead when Dixon found Brian Paysinger with a 24-yard pass. Forty seconds later, they added another score with Dixon’s 6-yard pass to Jaison Williams.
