(STATS) – Former Eastern Washington quarterback Gage Gubrud says his season-ending toe injury last season fortified his ability to be patient.
He would tell himself something better will be coming his way.
The FCS’ single-season record-holder for passing yards thought a pro career would be next, but he’s being patient with that endeavor as well because he’s waiting to see if the NCAA will grant him a sixth season of eligibility. If so, his plan is to spend a graduate transfer season at Washington State, according to The Spokesman-Review.
Gubrud suffered his injury – similar to turf toe – in Eastern Washington’s fifth game Sept. 29 at Montana State. Prior to Gubrud having surgery on Oct. 31, the Big Sky university announced the fifth-year senior’s college career was over, but only because he had exceeded the four-game redshirt rule.
The Eagles then won a share of the conference title and advanced in the FCS playoffs to the national championship game, where they lost to North Dakota State. A player can receive a medical redshirt if he’s played in one-third or fewer of his team’s games, and the title game was EWU’s 15th.
Gubrud redshirted in 2014 during his first season at Eastern Washington. In his career, he passed for 9,984 yards, including a record 5,160 in 2016 after beating Washington State in his first career start, and had 11,026 yards of total offense and 100 total touchdowns. He was a two-time finalist for the STATS FCS Walter Payton Award.
