BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) -Kyle Minett and Cory Koenig scored two touchdowns apiece Saturday as South Dakota State avoided its first 0-4 start in 38 years with a 38-3 win over Texas State.
Minett carried 11 times for 134 yards and scored on runs of 40 and 29 yards for the Jackrabbits (1-3). Koenig ran for 41 yards and capped two long scoring drives with 1-yard runs.
The Jackrabbits, who started last season 0-3 before winning seven straight games, last opened 0-4 in 1969. They fell behind late in the first quarter on Andrew Ireland’s 48-yard field goal.
But that was all the scoring for the Bobcats (1-3), who had 325 yards of total offense but couldn’t find the end zone or avoid their third straight loss.
Texas State quarterback Bradley George was 14-for-24 for just 119 yards. George set a Texas State record for pass completions (30) in a loss to Baylor last weekend. Backup quarterback Clint Toon replaced George and was 10-for-17 for 54 yards.
Karrington Bush rushed 13 times for 105 yards for the Bobcats.
After falling behind 3-0, the Jackrabbits took the lead for good on Ryan Berry’s 49-yard touchdown pass to JaRon Harris with 3:54 left in the first quarter. Berry was 15-for-24 for 226 yards.
Harris caught four passes for a team-high 71 yards.
Parker Douglass kicked a 30-yard field goal to make it 10-3 early in the second quarter.
Koenig and Minett each scored touchdowns in the second and fourth quarters. The Jackrabbits, who rolled up 431 yards of total offense, led 24-3 at halftime.
